Spaziergang nach Shoe Cove

Bei der Post in Pouch Cove fängt ein Teilstück des East Coast Trail Wanderweges an. Heute wollten wir nur einen schnellen Spaziergang nach Shoe Cove machen. Der Wind war nämlich sehr stark und lässt den Weg viel länger erscheinen. Wie kleine Nadeln piekste uns die Gischt ins Gesicht.


Auf dem Weg nach Shoe Cove kamen wie an einem kleinen Wasserfall vorbei, dessen Wasserstrom durch den Wind nach oben geblasen wurde:


Das führte zu sehr lokalisiertem Eisregen:



In Shoe Cove angekommen bot sich ein interessanter Anblick.


Die Gischt war zu Schaum geschlagen worden und lag an manchen Stellen einen halben Meter hoch. Ich hatte alle möglichen Assoziationen: die Gischt hob und senkte sich wie ein atmendes Wesen oder wie blubbernde Lava oder sah aus wie die Oberfläche eines Topfes mit kochendem Pudding.

Neue Direktflüge nach St.John's, Neufundland

Update 4.7. 2011: Die einzigen Direktflüge nach Europa, genauer nach London Heathrow, werden wieder nur im Sommer und nur von Air Canada angeboten. Ansonsten muss man immer über Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal oder Halifax fliegen.

Am 17. Dezember 2009 verkündete Air Canada, dass es ab Mai 2010 (bis 27. September) tägliche Direktflüge nach London Heathrow geben wird. Hier die Info von der AC-Seite.

Air Canada behauptet, dass die Wiederaufnahme dieser Flugstrecke keine Wettbewerbsmaßnahme gegen Go Travel Direct sei, die ihre Direktflüge nach London Gatwick im Juni aufnehmen. Die britische Chartergesellschaft Monarch Airlines wird für Go Travel Direct fliegen.


Flug nach London und zurück kostet etwa 900 CAD. Es kommen aber 400 CAD Gebühren dazu.


Mit Go Travel Direct kostet es etwa 800 CAD inklusive Gebühren. Der Pferdefuß ist wohl die Ankunftszeit in London Gatwick: 3.20 am Morgen! (Von London geht es um 16 Uhr los, Ankunft in St. John's um 19.05 Uhr, Flugzeit 5h35 Minuten.)

Are we lucky or what?

We're back in Newfoundland. We beat the snow in France and managed to catch our connecting flight in Montreal, meet up with our youngest one in the airport and get home safely. All I can say is, it's good to be home. I am glad we were not part of the traffic/weather mess described here at CNN.

Monday, the thesis will be put into enveloppes and be sent off to the two readers, one of whom is in the departement and the other an outside reader. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Snow

- but not in Paris. It only rains from time to time over here.

B. sent us pictures from the lovely fluffy white stuff Newfoundland has been getting. I hope there will be some more snow when we get back in ten days, or so.

Can you tell? I also am missing our dog, Gemma.

There is no question that a campagn launched by the International Advertising Association (IAA)along with corporate partners and the UN will draw fire from all kind of directions. However, this campaign raises awareness for the UN climate summit in Copenhagen. I truly believe that climate change deniers will one day be regarded as cousins to holocaust deniers, since it will cost many people's lives not to reduce CO2 output on a global level in the near future.

Why is it so hard to understand that climate change with its global warming does not mean St.John's or Toronto will become the new sun destination? Global warming does not just mean the oceans are warming but that weather is becoming more and more extreme. We will see more droughts as well as more floodings. We will equally see many climate refugees as desertification and coastal floodings drive people from their home regions.

Calling this view alarmist is burying one's head in the sand (or snow, as it were). And as important it is to be conscious of one's personal carbon footprint, it is crucial this challenge be met at a higher level.

The last chapter

is sent in for review. Now I am knitting together all the other chapters (nasty work), cleaning up the bibliography and hoping that a pre-final draft version will be ready soon. (I will definitely not break down, if I never ever get to read a single word by R. S. again .)

Tuesday afternoon we're off to Southern France. Mais non, not for a holiday! It's work down there too, another conference. But we hope to sneak in a day and a half to visit the surrounding area by rental car.

Also, I met some very sweet neighbours who create jewelry and have a nice little showroom and workshop around the corner from us: Rafia & Bossa.

Photos in a box

There really is no time to write up an in depth entry today so I have rummaged in my virtual shoebox and picked a photo from our trip to Burgundy as to not deprive you ;-).

As the backlight was way to bright, I had to make some changes to the lighting. The photo now reminds me of an old postcard.

The castle is called Berzé-le-Chatel and is supposed to be one of the more important castles in southern Burgundy. The castle is mentioned in papers from the Cluny Abbey in the year 991. It seems to have been built around a Carolingian chapel. Unfortunately I have not visited this castle yet, but hope to next time I am in the area.
